Game of Thrones: Top 10 Moments of Season 4

It’s been a few months since the Game of Thrones season 4 finale, and we’re officially wrapping up this epic season with a countdown of the greatest moments from season 4. A ton of stuff happened, so if we left anything out, comment or Tweet us. Join the discussion.

Oh and there will be spoilers! You’ve been warned.

Arya Bye

10.Arya leaves Westeros

We’re starting off this countdown with the final scene of this season, Arya stark has officially left the buildin’!! After her long and scary journey, she has the chance to finally use the Braavosi coin she received so many seasons ago. She hitches a ride on a Braavosi ship and doesn’t look back. I cannot wait for Arya’s journey in the upcoming seasons. Traditionally, they end off the seasons with a final dragon/Khaleesi shot, but this season they chose differently. I wonder if that was on purpose. This year at Comic Con a fan asked Maisie Williams (Arya) what to expect of her character in the next season, she replied ‘I am no one’. For readers of the book, this is everything

9. Grandma Tyrell admits to murdering Joffrey

Did she really admit it though? Another reason why I love Game of Thrones – the women always get a chance to shine. Lady Olenna (Margaery’s grandmother) was the definition of a boss ass bish this season when she refused to let the Lannisters control her granddaughter and the plans for the royal wedding. Whether she was in a scene with her granddaughter or Tywin Lannister, she always had something smart and sassy to say, and she usually had the last word. She might be a cute lil’ old lady but she sure knows what she’s doing, I’m sure jaws dropped when she admitted to Margaery that she had been planning Joffrey’s murder with Littlefinger. Say whaaaat!? Amazing, more twists and turns just how we like it. Also she’s given Margaery this sense of strong support and backing, and it’s really coming in use now that Margaery has to sort of ‘swoon’ Prince Tommen away from his over bearing mother Cersei.

8. Bran leaves Jon at the Night’s Watch

I think one of the reasons we love Game of Thrones so much is because they know how to break our hearts and somehow make us love them even more. The journey of Bran Stark is a long and grueling one, so when his crew arrives at the Night’s Watch every single fan was hoping for Bran to reunite with his older brother Jon. Unfortunately, the Stark children are too smart for their own good, Bran watches his brother fight and makes a heart breaking decision to leave without seeing his brother. Bran understood that the mission of finding the three eyed raven (damn you bird!) was more important than him reuniting with Jon. He knew once Jon saw him, he would never let his younger brother go beyond the wall, ruining their entire mission. Really heartbreaking scene though.

7. Prince of Dorne / Tyrion talk

Probably one of the best chats of the season, the Prince of Dorne visits Tyrion in his prison cell. This is where everyone jumped on the Dorne bandwagon, and a crucial scene for the writers wanting the audience to take OB’s side. Oberyn’s insights on the Cersei/Tyrion dynamic proves to the audience how smart and sensitive he really is. So now we like him more right? He explains the first time he ever met the Lannister children, Tyrion was still a baby. His sister Cersei hated him even then and Oberyn always wondered how one sister could hate her brother so deeply. And then he unleashes a bombshell and tells Tyrion he will fight for him during the trial by battle. So now we like and we’re worried about him too!?! Oh god this isn’t going to end well.

Littlefinger Pushes Lysa

6. Littlefinger pushes Lysa

This guy…basically started the entire show. He was behind Jon Arryn’s death, he was behind mostly everything that went wrong for the Starks…and now he’s behind Lady Lysa of the Vail because he’s about to push her into the vortex!! After he saves Sansa from King’s Landing, he lies to everyone at the Vail about her, calling her his ‘niece’. He marries Sansa’s aunt Lysa, and puts himself that much closer to ruling the Vail (practically untouchable by enemies because it sits on top of a mountain) When Lysa sees Littlefinger kissing Sansa, she freaks out and almost kills the young girl. But Littlefinger has bigger plans, one that doesn’t involve a wrinkly old witch…and one that does involve a young and beautiful red head.  He pushes Lysa into the empty hole that is thousands of feet in the air. Bye bye crazy auntie!

5. Khaleesi locks up her dragons

We didn’t get to see a whole lot of our Khaleesi this season, but when we did see her she was most likely depressed over how powerful her teenager dragons had become. When Drogon ends up scorching a little girl from town, she has no choice but to lock up Viserion and Rhaegal (Drogon is missing). It was such an emotional scene, and probably one of the most expensive because we got to see the dragons up close…and in chains? Okay I hope those things are strong enough.

Bloood

4. Prince of Dorne Battle

Everyone loves Oberyn. From his first on screen moment he had all the ladies, and probably men cheering for him. He was the bad boy/sweetheart/nymphomaniac this season needed, and boy did he play it well to the last second. Instantly he became a fan favourite because he literally didn’t give a s@!% about what people thought of him- especially the Lannisters. He really was the knight in shining armour for Tyrion, until Gregor Clegane smushed his head so hard his brains poured out of his eyes. Graphic enough? Also, it could probably be one of the most nail biting moments of the season – true definition of a ‘trial by battle’.

3. Joffrey Dies at his own wedding

Okay we definitely knew this was going to happen, but at a wedding- his own wedding?! Well, obviously, did you guys not watch season 3 episode 9? Nothing good ever comes out of a wedding in Game of Thrones. This was the moment every single fan had been waiting for, unfortunately it came at a time when we sort of forgot about Joffrey. It should’ve happened in his prime douchebagerry days. Nevertheless, it was an epic scene, I didn’t know what to do, laugh/cry/clap, the makeup design on poisoned Joffrey was on point. Everyone says that the book readers must find it boring or ‘not as fun’ because we know what’s about to happen. Let me just say, I was so excited for this episode, for this scene, it was worth the 6 month 1200 page read. Trust me.

Bye Daddy

2. Tyrion Lannister greatest speech of all time and then kills Tywin Lannister (his father).

Don’t mind the long title- It’s because I couldn’t find a way of separating these two scenes, because they sort of come hand in hand in understanding what led Tyrion to do what he did.  Tyrion’s speech in court showed all the pain and hurt he’s suffered through his entire life. Not only as a child, but seeing his love Shay walk onto the stand and admit to the court that she thought Tyrion was a ‘monster’, it was absolutely painful. After having a father that wants him dead, and Shay having left him for his father, what other choice did he have? He needed to make peace with King’s Landing before leaving, even if that meant killing his daddy while he was in the loo. I’ve discussed this with a bunch of people, and it was almost like everyone understood why it had to happen, but I don’t think anyone expected it to go down the way it did. Fact: Tywin is really dead, he’s not coming back. With everything Tyrion dealt with this season he really deserved a strong finish, of course it’s not just about Tyrion getting revenge, it’s also about the Kingdom. What the f is going to happen now that Prince Tommen doesn’t have Grandpapa to guide him? It might be the end of the blonde bobbleheads. Honourable Mentions: Jamie Lannister and the Eunuch who came out of the woodworks to help Tyrion escape.

Love

1. Jon Snow and Ygritte

Okay so some people will definitely disagree with this one being the number one moment but as a female fan of the show – I love the love stories!! We’ve seen our fair share of romances through the seasons, but Jon Snow and Ygritte was definitely/most probably the greatest of all time. When I read this scene in the book I immediately wished I could see it play in front of me. Some days (because I truly contemplate the outcomes of GoT on a daily basis – usually on the subway) I wish more happened in that scene, I wish they got to have a little more privacy (hello there were arrows flying around), but I still feel like it was the right timing, and it was just a tragically beautiful scene. But wipe those tears away…did you know the actors who play Jon and Ygritte are dating in real life? That makes me feel much better, but is Jon Snow ever going to find true love? Or maybe he’s destined for something greater like Khaleesi, maybe these two major characters are just never going to find real love. Maybe they’ll find each other? Okay I need to stop.

This was one of the most challenging countdowns to write up because there were so many great moments from this season, if you feel like we missed anything Tweet or Message us and let us know!
